Having spent her childhood in central Massachusetts, Dr. Emery graduated from Worcester Academy. During this time, her enthusiasm in dentistry began while assisting in her mother's dental practice. This interest was amplified several years later during a working trip to the rural villages of Nicaragua as part of a volunteer team. She went on to Pennsylvania to receive a B.S. degree from Susquehanna University.
Dr. Emery and her mother Dr. J.R. Courtman, together became the first mother/daughter to receive a D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Although plans were to join her mother's practice in Massachusetts, a weekend trip to Chicago changed her life.
